INTER-BARANGAY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT BEST OF 3 FINALS! KELVIN KING OF CUATRO, MVP!
Joash Rosalinas scored the final seven points for Camambugan and played the game of his life to carry his team to a pulsating Game 1 win over the defending champion Cuatro, 82-78.
The team captain proved he is still a force to reckon with by tallying twelve points in the final quarter highlighted by seven straight points including five out of six free throws in the final 1:42 mark of the game and Camambugan protecting just a two-point lead, 75-73 that made ineffective Mantagbac’s furious comeback bid this time.
In the elimination round, Camambugan suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of Mantagbac, 68-61 despite leading by as much as 23 points early in the second quarter.
Rosalinas and Cuatro’s Mark Joseph Cadag, a member of this year’s All-Defensive Team engaged in an entertaining fourth quarter duel with Cadag, almost a one-man team in the quarter, scoring 15 points, grabbing five rebounds and blocking two shots.
Rosalinas finished the game with 26 points including 3 threes, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists. Cadag had a monster performance pouring in 29 points in the game to go with 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals in a losing effort for Mantagbac.
It was the first defeat in the tournament for the defending champions after sweeping all their elimination round, quarterfinal and semifinal opponents.
Xavier Balane, a member of the tournament’s Mythical Five also had a big game for Camambugan, tallying 15 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Camambugan played without Miguel Palogan, another member of the Mythical Five but players like Rosalinas and John Mark Sulpa stepped up big time to make Palogan’s absence unfelt.
Sulpa, contributing only 2 points in the first 20 minutes, led the third quarter attack with 10 points and sustained it with 5 points in the fourth before fouling out with three minutes remaining. He finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Raymond Abejo also of Camambugan, a Most Improved Player and All-Defensive Team awardee, played his usual game making 14 points, pulling down 8 rebounds, swatting 2 attempts and stealing twice.
The other reliable for Camambugan, Nelson Bradecina collared 12 rebounds and drilled 8 points.
This year’s MVP, Kelvin King of Cuatro produced a sub-par performance in Game 1, somewhat bothered by the stingy defense of Camambugan, ending the game with 11 points and 6 rebounds.
The 2014 MVP Aderian Campollo had a better game with 22 points including the first seven points of Mantagbac, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.
In last year’s Finals, Camambugan also took Game 1, but Cuatro mightily bounced back in Games 2 and 3 to capture the championship.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is on December 22, Tuesday at 8:30 pm after the exhibition game between referees and coaches and the final round of the three point shootout.
